I can't edit Sidki's blockfiles in Vista Ultimate. When I click on the file I want to edit, notepad does not open. Nothing happens at all when I click on CookieValues for instance. Is there some trick in Vista that I need to know about? Vista drives me nuts. (Off Topic -for instance: I didn't know (neither did the Microsoft engineer who spent nearly two hours on the phone with me today trying to fix it) that, for instance, in IE7 or 8 on Vista (but not on XP) that in Internet Options/Advanced tab that it was normal for there to be no boxes, by the headings, with or without checkmarks in them. I thought IE8 had not installed properly because Advanced tab didn't look like it does on XP and Windows versions before XP also. I figured out by accident after the Microsoft engineer, toward the end of two hours of trying to fix the "problem" told me that running SFC would fix it and if it didn't to call Microsoft back), that you are supposed to click on each item to change whether it is turned on or off instead of checking/unchecking in the box, on the left side of the item like in XP, 98SE, etc).
So, is there some little similar something (that is only in Vista) that I am missing about Vista that is keeping notepad from loading the .ptxt file? I can add to the blockfile as that pops up but that is not invoking notepad. I even tried opening notepad (make sure it opened in Vista), leaving it open and then trying to "edit blockfile" but the .ptxt file still doesn't open in notepad.
i'm on WinXP and i myself have ALL of these changed to .txt, i don't see the need for an "extra" file-type...
in XP, you have to "assign" .ptxt's to open in Notepad via an "open with" OS Context Menu, not sure "what" you need to do in Vista...
but i am quite confident that if you return everything to .txt, everything will behave as expected...
don't forget to also change the extensions in the "lists" section of the config...
even in XP, i always thought the "extra" file-type was a 'nuisance'...
Hmm...I haven't often wanted to edit anything. As you can tell from posts, I am not a sophisticated Proxo user.
I just tried edit blockfile: Cookielist from the default Proxo (not Sidki's config) and that opened instantly in Notepad...but it is a .txt file. So, you are right that in Vista the problem is the files in Sidki's config are .ptxt and Vista doesn't know what to do.
On my XP Pro, in Explorer/Folder Options/file types .ptxt is associated with Notepad. In Vista there is no File Types tab in Explorer/Folder Options. GRRRRR....Why would Microsoft do away with that??? Anyhow, I clicked on Help for Folder Options in Vista and got to a stupid page that said to right click on the file and then choose from the list what program to use to open the file. That doesn't work with .ptxt files in Sidki's config if I right click on the Proxo icon in systray, then choose Edit Blockfile and then in the lists that popup try to right click on the CookieValues.ptxt file. Anyhow, that is a stupid way. There should be a File Types tab somewhere in Explorer in Vista. This is the sort thing in Vista that drives me right up the wall...why Microsoft had to muck around and change Windows Explorer so much on Vista is beyond my comprehension. Yeah, I can change it to .txt but I shouldn't have to do that if I'd rather assign .ptxt to Notepad from File Types in Explorer.
I figured it out. Vista is such a headache. I had to go into Program files/ Proxo/Lists/Sidki and then right click on the CookieValues.ptxt file. That gave me a popup that Windows didn't know how to open the file and then offered me the chance to look for the appropriate program on my computer. I told it to use Notepad for ALL .ptxt files. So, everything is fine now. I am still very irritated at Microsoft. Why did they remove the File Types tab in Explorer in Vista? Why make me do this in such a round about stupid way? It is much easier to make assignments in File Types tab in Explorer Folder Options. That tab has been there since Windows 95. Why do away with it in Vista? (This Vista I have is on a virtual machine. I got Vista Ultimate free from Microsoft for participating in the Windows Feedback Panel. So, I am trying Vista in a virtual machine to see if I can get used to it if I buy a new machine. But it is so frustrating in so many unnecessary ways).
Mele;
You figured it out, and that's the way that Microsoft laid out for you in their Help file article. As to why they took out the File Types tab from the Tools/Folder Options dialog, no one will ever know (outside of Microsoft itself).
However, be aware that I have now successfully upgraded two laptops from Vista (any version) to XP Pro. It does take time and effort, but while others are calling me a Luddite, I'm gettin' work done, because I'm not constantly having to stop and search for something that should be "right there", or learn yet another way to do the same old task.
That's the best advice I (or anyone!) can give you, on the topic of using Vista.
