Oh yeah. Now that's what I'm talking about Big Teeth

Now the icing on the cake would be if I could selectively stop items being added to the cart based on pre specified strings in the html.

For example if a certain system with tag 012345 is being offered at ?600 and the filter is set to accept items up to ?700 but I've looked at that system and it is very low spec. Can I tell the filter not to add system 012345 to the cart if it has a price of ?600.

This would mean that if Dell change the price of that system and it meets the generic price filter it will be re-added to the cart.

How powerful is the Filter Language?

The filter language is as powerful as the javascript language.

You got to admit, you can't do this with ANY other ad/popup killer! Big Teeth
In my opinion, there is no ad/popup program more powerful than Proxomitron. (well, perhaps Proximodo)

A javascript script could be written to do that, but my knowledge in the javascript language is very limited.

Perhaps another member could share some of his/her knowledge Eyes Closed Smile

Glad it works!

Well thanks a million. I really shouldn't have asked for more but of course I'd be delighted if this filter is developed further. I'd have to agree that Proxomitron is a remarkable tool in the right hands.

Made a donation to Child Find Of America (top rated at charitywatch.org) on your behalf before you put the link in here. Nevertheless the next time I pick up a bargain at the Dell site, I'll remember where I got the help from Wink

Hail Thanks for working on this!! A very sharp young man (Andrew) notified me that this was done. I am not sure at whose begging that this was worked on, but THANK YOU! I am serious about my thanks and will put my money where my mouth is. I understand that you are in serious trouble because a "backer" did not come through with the money?

Anyone who uses this will be a very thankless person if they don't share at least 25% of the added savings PER system bought using this filter.

I say we start up an "society" who's main purpose is advancing the betterment of those without. I originally, a long time ago, asked that this filter be done to use on the Dell outlet site. I will be taking the same amount of monies that I have set aside to help a couple charities and be able to get them BETTER systems as well as help them be bale to sell some systems to generate income to pay for silly things like medicine, blankets, you know, the things that most of us take for granted. Hopefully, everyone will you their specific contacts, talents, shills, and abilities to try to make an impact in the lives of those who would be happy to dine at McDonalds......dumpster. Believe me, they are out there. In fact, they live like Kings compared to a couple of kids I "adopted" in Haiti. They have no power, running water, or shelter. The average kid who gets the flu dies! Can you imagine every time one of your friends or family caught the every day flu, one of them would die? There is a need, You can make a difference. There are a couple of Charities that I can vouch for 1st hand that over 90% of the donation make it all the way into the hands of those in need. There are a lot of people volunteering to be able to attain such hi flow through rates! My $60 per month feeds my 2 kids, pays for their education, AND gets their parents training on how to parent!

Heck, for $500, I can get them a cow and some other animals that allow them to go into business for themselves to supply food for their poor communities.

I have NEVER done anything like this. I have a raging Migraine to boot, maybe that's why I am doing this? If we can get some replies as to who wants to try and help in whatever way they can, maybe we can find someone to give us a sliver of server time to keep track of things, what do you all think??

Papa

Boys and Girls;

Ya know, all the glitz and glitter aside, what I wanna know is, why would anybody want a filter to automatically choose one or more items from an on-line catalog, and then place it/them within a shopping cart? I mean, two things pop into my mind almost simultaneously:

A ) Would you really want to buy something sight-unseen? Aren't you at least a slight bit interested in what you're bidding on? (You do realize, do you not, that you are caught up in 'auction-mania' when you do this.) To say to yourself "Gee, this is cheap, I think I'll take it no matter what" is like saying "Hey, I wanna be a pauper!"

B ) Just how many computers do you need to buy..... anyway? I mean, I can get along just fine with one, although I do have a spare laying around here somewhere..... [rolleyes] I swear, at least a few of you appear to be buying as many systems as you can get your hands on. Great for Dell's bottom line.... howz yer wallet, mate? Ever heard of saving for your old age? Can't spend computers to buy food or rent - or do you know something I've not yet learned? :P

This is mostly serious, even if I've done a poor job of cloaking it in humor. Please frame your answers as you see fit. [beatdown] or Cheers

Hehe - Oddysey

If the items in the cart dont look any good on closer inspection then they'll get tossed back after manually looking at the specs.

I'm trying to end up with a high spec notebook by initially getting a really good deal on a cheap one and selling it on ebay or somewhere. Then buying a slightly better bargain and repeating. Being skint means I cant just go out and buy a top of the range notebook at step #1.

BTW, sometimes the web server will throw a fit and proxomitron stalls with

Quote:Error connecting to site

The Proxomitron couldn't connect to...
outlet.dell.com/Emea_Dfo/EuDispatcher?target=InventoryPage&action=filter&lob=INSP&unique=1115089534445&sess
The site may be busy or the web server may be down.

This means that the search stalls overnight for example and after 15 minutes of inactivity the shopping basket auto empties Sad

Hate to reply to myself but just a note that I'm going to try adding a second filter along the lines of

replace -
Code:
<base href="http://Local.ptron/ProxyLogo.jpg">
with

Code:
<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="10">

so that hopefully whenever proxomitron comes up with an error it will try to refresh the page. Wonder if it will work? I'll find out in the morning.

EDIT - It doesn't work - Help - How can I get it to refresh after a server error or similar? Thanks Smile!

Still no joy and I cant seem to sign up for the official forum either (thought I'd try bugging somebody else for a change Wink)

An example of the error html is
Code:
<html><head><title>The Proxomitron Reveals...</title>
<base href="http://Local.ptron/ProxyLogo.jpg">
<LINK REL="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="Errors.css">
</head>
<body>
<table border=0 cellspacing=0 cellpadding=0 width=100%>
<tr><td valign=top>
<img src="ProxyLogo.jpg" border=0 hspace=0 vspace=0 align=left>
<table border=0 cellpadding=4><tr><td valign=top>
<span class='err1'>Error connecting to site</span><p>
The Proxomitron couldn't connect to...<br>
<span class='err2'> outlet.dell.com/Emea_Dfo/EuDispatcher?target=InventoryPage&action=filter&lob=INSP&unique=1115203139288&sess </span><br>
The site may be busy or the web server may be down.
</td></tr></table>
</td></tr></table>
</body></html>

Interesting business model you have there. Sounds like a lotta work, but what the hey, it's your thing. <_<

As for recovering from a dropped server connection, I don't think that Proxo will be any help here. Consider:

First, Proxo's job is to filter requests going out to the web, and data coming back to us in response. No timing mechanism is built in to initiate actions, so far as I know. At least, not according to the help file - I don't see anything therein that leads me to believe that Proxo can be automated in any way.

Next, your browser is pretty much manually operated - no automation is built in. I'm not sure, I've never tried it, but I'd think that the Task Scheduler might be able to launch a browser session with a URL shortcut, I don't know. The trick is to keep from re-launching over and over - testing for a current session would be paramount to good resource management.

However, in seeming contradiction to the above two pieces, remember that once your browser is up and connected, any running javascript timers will be in effect. That means that you can force a page to reload, which in turn will bring Proxo into play, and that's the whole reason for your exercise. In essence, this is how you're keeping the shopping cart from being emptied after 15 minutes - a forced page reload is enough to keep the server happy, and when you get up in the morning, the shopping cart is ready for your inspection.

There are other ways to launch a shortcut besides Task Scheduler, but since I don't use any of that stuff, I'm not the person to ask about it. Try asking JakBeNymble, he's been known to do crazy things like this! :P

Good luck!

Cheers I'll keep at it. It just seems that replacing
Code:
<LINK REL="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="Errors.css">
</head>
<body>
in the above html with
Code:
<LINK REL="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="Errors.css">
</head>
<body>
<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="10">
should work ..... shouldn't it?

BTW, It's not so much a business model as a dream of getting a high end laptop for next to nothing (albeit after having to trawl through the deals and get a bit of luck on ebay). Beggars can't be choosers eh Big Teeth

You could make the page in a frame and have the code in the top frame that reloads the other frame. the page never reloads just the frame with the page. You could use some javascript to get it done.

Thanks! That seems like it should work. Do you know if this would be a trivial piece of code to write? If so I could do with a hand. If not, I wont ask and I'll go and start reading javascript tutorials.
