Tor updated to 0.1.0.16.

2006-01-02: Tor 0.1.0.16 fixes nine rare crash bugs, and includes backports from the 0.1.1.x tree to be more aggressive about retrying failed streams.

Thanks. I got it. Still don't fix my problems. How should I set Zone Alarm up to handle tor?

- Kye-U - Jan. 07, 2006 04:56 AM

It should be able to act as a server.

When I had Zone Alarm, I didn't need to set anything.

When the notification popup came up, I just checked "Remember this setting" and clicked on Allow...

I did that but I can't get this setup to work again.

Long time no update...

For any one who is interested (and for who doesn't already know) Tor has been updated to the latest stable release of 0.1.1.20

And Vidialia went to 0.0.4 a little while ago (the recommended Control Panel for Tor)

I just downloaded that program Vidalia (which I had never heard of before this) and it's pretty useful. Everyone that uses Tor should download it and take a look. It hides the command window and just has a little icon on the system tray.

The latest copy of Vidalia (came out on the 2nd of June - so you may have just missed it or got it Shea) is version 0.0.5 and it includes "major new features, most notably a map of the world plotting the geographic location of routers on the Tor network and showing you where exactly your traffic is going"

Pretty nifty, not very useful really, but nifty none the less for the curious amongst us.

Enjoy

Hi all - Great thread. Thanks to Kye-U for his guide and all who have added to the thread.

Could you help me on 2 points please ?

I've played around with a couple of variations, starting with Vidalia and now opted for the less graphic, Proxomitron, Privoxy, Tor set-up. All seems fine, no obvious problems.

1. My first question relates to entering my router's address in the exceptions list in my browser. It's not mentioned specifically by Kye-U in his initial post, tho' I see he mentions only having the "localhost, 127.0.0.1" entry in a later post.

Should my router's address be added here ? Is this something that should always be done - or doesn't it really matter ? I'm unclear about this one.

If it should be entered, in Opera it's very clear cut. The exceptions list is just a blank field and appears to invite the user to put in the relevant address as I would type it into the browser. In Firefox the 'No Proxy for' field already contains "localhost, 127.0.0.1". Do I keep this and simply add my router address - so that were it 1.12.12.123 - it would read:-

localhost, 127.0.0.1, 1.12.12.123

2. My second question relates to Kye-U's tool for making Tor a 'Hidden Service'.

I'm running Windows XP(SP2) on this machine - could you please explain in 'Tools for Dummy's' talk, what the 'Make Tor a hidden service' tool does.

What changes I should expect to see on installing this - Pros & Cons etc.

Thanks all Smile!.

1. That's exactly what you do.

Many thanks for confirmation Shea - much appreciated Smile!.

OK...being that Privoxy has a new update, is the set up still the same? I can't get my old set up to work any more.

RE: Setting up Tor with Privoxy and Proxomitron - Magician - Oct. 27, 2006 12:40 AM

ooo. I new Privoxy version, I missed that!

Hmm.. having a browse through th website I see nothing to indicate any fundamental changes to how privoxy works, so I'm not sure why 3.0.5 Beta is causing you problems (completely not helpfuk I know!). More investigation required I think. :-)

Yeah, I'm not sure either. It was working for awhile there. I might have to get back through the set up again.

One thing the installer for the new version does do is completely overwrite all of the config files that the older version uses (and it adds a bucket load more options to the config files).

When I updated it wouldnt work until I went thru the config files and editted them to match what I had originally.

I'm not able to find the last version of Aphoxy (1.3 ?).
Do you can to upload it and also the zip with the example to filter the site to use with Proxomitron + Tor?
