Sidki webpage filter blocks downloads - Mele20 - Oct. 07, 2008 12:42 PM

I cannot download at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=fad62198-220c-4717-b044-829ae4f7c125&DisplayLang=en on Vista Ultimate unless I bypass Proxo's webpage filters.I don't often use IE. Fx is my default browser but I can't download WGA on Fx unless I install a plugin and I don't want to do that. So, I used IE7 and I could not even see the information bar. Proxo blocks it. So, I just turned off the information bar in IE settings. I still could not get a download box there until I unchecked webpage filters.

I don't think Proxo should interfere with the information bar or if you want to turn it off, then Proxo certainly should allow the download box to appear! I don't want to have to remember to uncheck webpage filters anytime I want to download something using IE. It is not just Microsoft Download Center where Proxo is interfering with downloads but anywhere. I don't know how long this has been a problem as I usually use Fx for downloading but not at Microsoft sometimes and not at a few other sites.

This is a Sidki filter problem. I have not been able to get the information bar on IE6 on XP Pro for a long time and I bet it happened when I installed Sidki's Sept 2007 filters on that computer! I can't download on IE6 either. Never thought about it being a Proxo problem until now.

Yep. All this time on IE6 with no information bar. I asked at dslreports Microsoft Help forum and Microsoft IE Newsgroup why the information bar disappeared and when I disabled it why I still couldn't download at all on IE 6 (never got a download box) and all this time it is Sidki's filters as they block the information bar from appearing and when it is disabled they block a download box from appearing. I guess I am stupid for not thinking it might be the Proxo filters but I never did. On that computer with IE6, I have Sidki's filters going way back. I tried each and I could not get an information bar to appear (using the url I posted in the beginning of this thread for the test) until I went all the way back to the June 9, 2005 filters. If IE was my default browser I would have pursued this more intensely much sooner and found out the problem but I don't use IE much - and when I do usually just for browsing.

I also tried Proxo default filters and those do NOT block the information bar or if it is turned off they do not block getting a download box.

Does anyone know exactly which webpage filter from Sidki blocks the information bar, or download box, on all versions of IE on XP and Vista?

The filter that is most likely causing this is "Remove: Specific Post-HTML Blocks 7.04.10 (multi) [sd] (d.2 l.3).

Try putting this in the proper section (Post-html code) in the IncludeExclude-U file:

Code:
([^.]+.|)microsoft.com/downloads/         $SET(0=s_posthtml.)

Thanks! That is the filter causing the problem. Yours works but I want the information bar to appear anywhere I would use IE to download (not just files but ActiveX controls)and not just at Microsoft download site. Without it appearing, IE gets rather crippled and disabling the information bar doesn't work well either. So, I just unchecked that filter in Proxo. I don't use IE often but when I do, I want it to work properly.

What exactly (besides causing this problem in IE) does that filter do? Sorry, I am so ignorant about many of the filters. I always wanted to see some help file that would explain each one (well, some are easy for me to understand just looking at the name), but I don't know what "remove post HTML block" really means...see how dumb I am?

Before I unchecked that filter, I tried putting microsoft download site in the trusted zone but all that did was open a new window for IE! IE is unable to properly use tabbed browsing because of the zones (at least on Vista)! I got a message saying that because the tabs I had open already were in the internet zone, and the new tab was in the trusted zone, that IE had to open a new window. But even with the site in the trusted zone, I did not get the download box with Sidki's filter checked. So, putting sites that want to download ActiveX controls, files, etc. in the trusted zone is not a workaround.
