Google - full width - ProxRocks - Nov. 05, 2011 04:38 PM

has anyone been able to figure out how to get the search results to span the entire width of the screen instead of the third or so it currently spans?

I see entire width in all my browsers.

Is google sending you the old table based layout?

sweet! that helped!

now the next question, am i "supposed" to be getting the 'old' table-based layout?

i'm running a "shell" to IE8 emulating "IE8 Standards Mode"...
i'm on Win XP - and will not "upgrade" to Vista/7/etc for TWENTY years, if i can avoid it, lol...
ie, cannot "upgrade" to IE9...

I don't know. You didn't change. Could be new behavior based on the referer header or it may be due to server problems.

this reply is not directly on topic, but:

I've had recent trouble with google 'infinitely' reloading (while resisting my url cleanup filters).

by tedious luck a few years ago, i fixed this reloading problem somewhat on only images.google searches. But now http://www.google has (intermittently) begun the reloading problem, and I haven't yet fumbled upon a fix.

but I discovered that proxo's lynx useragent header filter causes Google to load a mid-2000s style page. much simpler and no reloading trouble. (lynx useragent is now in my user include-exclude for google urls)

so, returning to your topic: a more stable html+css is likely added benefit of the lynx layout. (google seems to change layout a few times a year, which *s-up your style fixes) (edit: I meant: frequently *s-up anyone's style fixes, which IME, refers to my style fixes.)

another benefit of this "old version" of google is that the searchphrase is in plain text below the search textbox, so you can select parts of the search phrase, and apply a bookmarklet.

good fix...

i hadn't thought about that for google, but yet i do the same exact thing for other sites...

setting the useragent string to antiquated browsers has been a godsend more than once Smile!

Could you please share the code you used? Many thanks.

here is what i was using, if it helps any...
i've since reverted to not using a modified user-agent for google, but this is what i was using when i was testing it out -
Code:
# Google Search - results pages
www.google.(*/)+{1}search\?
    $SET(0=a_code.f_ua_§Lynx/2%2e8%2e8dev%2e3 libwww-FM/2%2e14 SSL-MM/1%2e4%2e1.)

Thanks ProxRocks.
(I'm now using your updated google filters Smile! )

RE: Google - full width - ProxRocks - Dec. 18, 2011 08:29 PM

sweet!

i still plan on making a few changes, but no urgency...

i plan on, in the future, making video results toggle as playable right from within the google search results page instead of having to go to the actual site to play them...

i'll "probably" change the background color for results that are "children" of a "parent" result (ie, the results that are "indented")...

No hurry. Happy holidays to all Cheers

grypen set originally used something like this:
Code:
news.google.(co(m|.uk|.nz|.au|.jp))/    $SET(keyword=.Ua.)$SET(FakeUa=Lynx/2.8.4rel.1 libwww-FM/2.14)
I've mangled mine, and it doesn't look like that anymore.
