Observations on the new MyBBS layout - Oddysey - May. 05, 2006 04:11 AM Kye-U; Number 1: The top level of your site, kye-u.info, shows no menu, just a couple of news items. The very last line of all is a parse error report, just like the "good old days". ![]() Number 2: I see that when I use the PM feature, the bottom of the screen where I can Send or whatnot, the buttons are laid out like so: Send Message, Save as a Draft, Preview Message But under the screen where I write responses to a thread (or initiate a new thread, like right now), I see the same three buttons in this orger: Post Reply(Thread), Preview Post, Save as a Draft That requires that I "de-automate" my previewing habits! I like to see how everything looks first, but now I have to "think" about where to reach for the Preview button.Number 3: When I am in a PM screen, I don't see an easy way to get back to the regular forums. If I scroll to the bottom of the screen, then hit "Lite (Archive) Mode", then hit either of the Full Version links, I find myself back to the top of the forum listings. Seems kind of convoluted to me. Any chance of putting the "Forums" button on the main screen for managing one's PM's, please? (The two links "Return to Top" and "Return to Content" are worthless - I'm already on that screen, why try to take me there again????) And the link "The Unofficial Proxomitron Site" just takes me to the top level, which I've already discussed above. Number 4: Inserting a smilie into a message.... Yep, same old bugaboo. If I decide later to insert a smilie, it doesn't matter where I put the cursor first, the inserted smilie will be placed at the end of the text. I know we had that problem last time, and you fixed it right quick, so I hope the fix is just as easy this time around, too. ![]() OK, that's four things that I can think of. Should be enough to keep you busy for what, maybe 5 minutes? ![]() Thanks again! Oddysey p.s. Glad to see there won't be any flack about skins! But I'm fully expecting Siamesecat to release a version of his color filters that can be modified to suit, making the equivalent of a skin for this site!
RE: Observations on the new MyBBS layout - Oddysey - May. 05, 2006 04:17 AM Kye-U; I don't know if it's the software, perhaps it's "slim and trim" or whatever, but this thing is loading like greased lighting! Beaucoup cool! ![]() ![]() Oddysey RE: Observations on the new MyBBS layout - Oddysey - May. 05, 2006 04:19 AM Kye-U; Oops, got another one for ya.... Your file attachments, to forum replies? There's no list of accepted or unaccepted file types. You had that in the previous version of the forum, but I don't see it here. Not even a link to a page that might give such a list. Newbie users might appreciate it, eh? ![]() Oddysey RE: Observations on the new MyBBS layout - Kye-U - May. 05, 2006 04:48 AM #1: Fixed #2: Re-organized ![]() #3: Re-arranged order of footer links and added "Return to Forum Index" #4: Did some searching, looks like we'll have to live with this for a bit; I hope it's not a big issue ![]() #5: Done, you should see the following line underneath the "New Attachment" upload box, in both New Reply and New Thread: Quote:Allowed File Extensions: cfg, css, txt, doc, rar, zip, jpeg, jpg, gif, png RE: Observations on the new MyBBS layout - Siamesecat - May. 05, 2006 05:14 AM Oddysey, Quote:But I'm fully expecting Siamesecat to release a version of his color filters that can be modified to suit, making the equivalent of a skin for this site! The only reason I wrote the background filters was because I don't like white backgrounds. This page looks blue to me. I'm happy. RE: Observations on the new MyBBS layout - Oddysey - May. 06, 2006 04:35 PM Siamesecat; I get a more-or-less gray background, with differing shades of blue borders. ??? But you're right, it still looks better than the phpBB layout. ![]() Oddysey RE: Observations on the new MyBBS layout - Oddysey - May. 06, 2006 04:44 PM Kye-u; Yep, all better now! Much grass!! I notice that another longstanding issue of mine has been addressed by the new software. Remember when I asked for the "missing" link in the page title? I was grousing about how the links above a thread went "Proxo forum/Forum Related/About the Site" or something like that, and I couldn't go up just the one level to see the forums in that first block below the main index? (In this case, it would be Forum Related.) Well now, if I see it, I can click on it, and I'm taken to just that forum, not the whole main index! This is beaucoup cool! No more scrolling down to the bottom to see the General Interests forum topics, I can stay right where I'm at, and get everything at one shot. I'm liking this new stuff more and more. To Our Fearless Leader!Oddysey RE: Observations on the new MyBBS layout - Oddysey - May. 06, 2006 05:08 PM Kye-U; Possible infraction here.... Let's say that I've read the new posts in a thread or topic. Going back up to the index page of that particular sub-forum, I see that the page did not update itself to reflect my current status - it still believes that I haven't read the post(s). Eh bien, I say, and continue navigating up to the main index page. Again with the incorrect status.... according to the main index, I have not yet read the post(s). Refreshing the page (Ctrl-F5) does not improve the situation - I still haven't read the post(s)! Uh oh. I navigate back down to the sub-forum index page, and manually refresh that. It is now correct, it shows that there are no new unread posts. Going back up to the main index page, and it hasn't changed. But manually refreshing it does the trick, it is now correct. All of this tells me that when one reads a post, the index page immediately above does not properly reflect to the reader his/her status without a manual refresh. From there, the main index page relies on those sub-forum pages, so it too is incorrect until all of the lower-level pages have been manually refreshed. Needless to say, this is not very desirable behavior (or behaviour, for the Canuckistani's among us ). IIRC, the phpBB software also did this for awhile, and you finally straightened that out too. Any chance you can work your magic on MyBB, please? ![]() Thanks, buddy! Oddysey RE: Observations on the new MyBBS layout - Siamesecat - May. 07, 2006 07:52 AM Oddysey, Maybe that is why the pages load faster. The server is not having to check cookies and images to make sure that they match all the time. RE: Observations on the new MyBBS layout - ProxRocks - May. 08, 2006 07:48 PM can anything be done about the dashed borders around the code and quote inserts? the dashes look, well, dorky...
RE: Observations on the new MyBBS layout - Oddysey - May. 09, 2006 06:46 AM ProxRocks, Quote:can anything be done about the dashed borders around the code and quote inserts?Don't tell me that someone took away your Dork Merit Badge, that would suck the hind one. ![]() On one forum I visit regularly, the quoted text is so small that I had to write a filter to insert HTML size coding to enlarge it so that my tired old eyes could read it. (That's on a proboards.com site, BTW.) Which leads me down the primrose path to this observation: The offending lines of code are div statements that call, from a d/l'ed style sheet, quote_header and quote_body. These two are called one right after the other, and they have roughly the same setup, to wit: (Ignore the PHP Code header!!) PHP Code: .quote_header {![]() Just a thought, tha's all. ![]() Oddysey p.s. Curses, there's another flaw.... the styles above are indented as usual in this kind of definition, but MyBBS formats them to remove the indents. Even using the [code] tag doesn't help, the indents are still removed. Only by using the [php] tag do the indents remain intact. Mama mia!
RE: Observations on the new MyBBS layout - Kye-U - May. 14, 2006 06:42 PM ProxRocks, and the rest, what would you like the quote, code and php boxes to be outlined with?
RE: Observations on the new MyBBS layout - ProxRocks - May. 15, 2006 10:52 AM just a regular ol' solid line... something like the solid lined box to the right of Post Subject: and around the subject of the message to which I am replying... nothin' special... the "dashes" are just plain 'irritating' (and although my Gecko engine renders them fine, while using the IE engine [my obvious preference, too many Gecko exploits of late], the "dashes" don't "consistently" display as 'dashes', but rather as a cluster of dashes, a small solid-line segment, more dashes, another solid-line segment of random length, more dashes, et cetera, at least for the vertical lines, the horizontal sections seem to be consistently displayed properly as dashes)... edit: swapped horizontal (side-to-side) versus vertical (top-to-bottom)... it's one of those "i-before-e" types of things, I can't keep 'em straight... RE: Observations on the new MyBBS layout - Kye-U - May. 15, 2006 08:16 PM Done. RE: Observations on the new MyBBS layout - ProxRocks - May. 15, 2006 09:30 PM awesome! much more cosmetically appealing... many thanks... |
