Arne, I recall Scott's distress regarding the multiple "wannabe official" forums...

...but, respectfully, I disagree that his decision (several times) to cease working on proxo was due to the influence of a single pestering person. I'm fairly certain that I understand who you're referring to & labeling his motivation as "greed" might be largely accurate, but I sensed it was also a matter of him wanting to "bask in (Scott's) reflected glory" -- to be in charge of something really big, really important. Regardless whether he would have been the best man for the job, or even if greed was partially responsible for his motivation, I respected and admired his passion.

Throughout my occasional private correspondence with Scott, his greatest frustration seemed to be from having painstakingly created thorough documentation... but few users were bothering to read it. Instead, they swamped him with "gimme gimme gimme" requests -- requests for custom filters (which they damn well could have learned to create themselves) and requests for additional features (mostly inane features, which were wholly uninteresting to Scott).

Scott loved hearing the clever ways people found to put his engine to use. Once the chatter across the various forums (and YahooGroup) became a continual stream of "gimme gimme" posts, naturally his interest (and motivation) waned.
