The system will be locked together, you won't be able to change one part of the system, like you can now with most computers.

As you can see from the date, the article is two years old. Blu-Ray has since won the war, and if I'm not mistaken, it carries a copy-protection similar to the AACS noted in the article. I doubt there will be any boycott, it's a bit late for that.
