Opera@USB + Flash...

here's a "trick" i've bumped into in the past and has resurfaced due to that dang flash resize project, lol...

that being a way to "install" Flash Player into Opera@USB (nothing new to "followers" of Opera@USB, but might be new to readers herein)...

(i "think" this works for Portable Firefox as well, i'll let our Firefox users update us on that one [wink]...)

basically, grab the flash-install file from it's home page...
use Universal Extractor (7-zip probably will work as well) to extract the contents - don't "install" (if you already installed the non-IE version of Flash Player on the host PC, you can find this file on the host PC [i don't recall the doc-and-set folder offhand])...

after "extracting", search for the file called NPSWF32.dll...
that's it, that is the ONLY file needed...

copy that into Opera@USB's program->plugins folder and whoala, you have Flash Player "installed" WITHOUT "installing it"...

(i'm "exactly" 86.42% sure that Opera@USB 'used to' pre-pack with the .dll included... it was only "legality fears" that prompted the removal, Adobe never even asked for its removal... [as the rumor goes from the Opera@USB community]... at any rate, the .dll is "legally obtained", it's just not necessarily "legal" to redistribute [ie; nope, not about to "attach" it herein, lol])...


at any rate, this is how us Opera@USB users "install-without-installing" Flash Player so that our portable browser has the ability to play flash on host computers that run IE-only and therefore do NOT have the non-IE player "installed"...

Don't tested in the portable, but Firefox uses the same file, going to about:plugins i saw it and its relation with following mime types:
application/x-shockwave-flash----Adobe Flash movie----swf
application/futuresplash----FutureSplash movie----spl

futuresplash???!!!

Edit: futuresplash was an older version of flash.

Good tip! That method works in regular (non-USB) Opera as well as regular installed Firefox too. Lately I've been flip-flopping between several Adobe versions 9 and 10 ... close browser, copy over different NPSWF32.DLL, and run with that.

7-Zip does work, that's what I've been using. Here's a link to the 7-Zip portable version:

One thing I haven't gotten used to about 7-Zip is that double-clicking on a file Runs it, instead I have to remember to click its Extract icon.

The folder for storing plugins in a regular Firefox is \plugins and can be located in the folder where you installed firefox or in %APPDATA%\Mozilla

That's the case where each user of the PC can have different plugins. But for all users to have the same one, drop the DLL into the /Plugins/ folder under where-ever Firefox is installed. In that folder there's probably already a npnul32.dll default plugin.

Maybe, but I don't remember ever using an xpt file. That may be for the case where the plugin will be placed in a user's %APPDATA%, which I don't do.

When I don't want Firefox to support Flash, I close the browser and delete the NPSWF32.DLL - then Flash no longer shows up in the About:Plugins page. When I do want Flash I copy in the DLL and upon restart Firefox shows Flash in its About:Plugins and all seems well.

If you've already got the DLL installed in your %APPDATA% then I suppose Firefox would probably look there first.

I discovered a tip for doing that faster. Go to tools, addons, you will see plugins there. Select the Shockwave Flash plugin and disable it. You can enable/disable it without restarting the browser. Hope it helps anything to you

Well that may explain one of the things the *.xpt file is for. The only thing showing in tools, addons is the DOM Inspector that I chose when installing Firefox. With me placing the DLL in the program's /Plugins/ folder, Firefox appearently sees it as a "system" component and not a "user" option.
