sidki-config: Jan 14 2009 beta 2
Hi all, here is beta 2 of the next config.

ReadMe Wrote:This config should work with all Gecko Browsers, IE clones > 5.5, Opera > 6.x
(a few config features disabled), Netscape 4.x, NCSA Mosaic, and OffByOne
(many features disabled). Most of the time i use it with Firefox.

Five "Modes" are available that allow the user to choose the config's initial
behavior. They range from silent, conservative filtering (Minimal and Light
Modes) to informational and proactive (Advanced Mode).

The directory in which this ReadMe is located contains more files:
Documents, optional replacements for default files, and extras like
bookmarklets etc.. See "!content.html" for details. Don't miss the directions
for use, "Config_Control.txt". ;-)

The set is distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License
(included). You can find the latest version at:

Thanks!

NOW:
Kye-U ( http://prxbx.com/ ) and ProxRocks for joining this project by
maintaining and supporting parts of the config.
(Further co-developers wanted! ;-)

whenever/phoenix for providing webspace and other logistic support.

EARLIER THIS DECADE:
Mona Oliver for her support in various ways.
http://mizzmona.com/

Joseph Daniel Sanchez for invaluable discussions and ideas.

JJoe for tracking down problems and helping with the docs.

A great number of ideas came from Paul Rupe's config set.

Jesse Ruderman's bookmarklets were a valuable resource for the Prox menu.

BetaNotes Wrote:This beta will use its own subdirectory, so you can run both, this and the
release version in parallel.

Welcome Kye-U (Google filters) and ProxRocks (Yahoo filters) to the

Changes:
- Numerous rewrites and modifications of content-type and content sniffing
filters, in order to avoid filtering of unrelated (esp. binary) content.
- Cut back - or improve - the most troublesome (i.e., heuristic) filters.
- Various scattered changes.

Note:
Most filters aren't fully downwards compatible, so please don't mix them with
the release config.

RE: sidki-config: Jan 14 2009 beta 2
Thanks very much, Sidki and other contributors.

For the first time in a while, I can now disable Adblock Plus and return to just using Prox. Smile! Several months ago, I pretty much stopped using your last config from a year ago, out of concerns the ad blocking was increasingly out of date. Not that it appeared to be _that_ bad anyway. Of late I have mainly been using Prox just as a browser proxy to run JJoe's Y!Login script. (probably still available in the Yahoo group's files)

I suspect this new config will have a slow take up, seeing as many users may now be ex-users and might not be familiar with this site.
However, I'm sure word will get out.
Smile!

So you apparently know that, from an objective point of view, this is utter nonsense. Wink

The backbone of this config are generic filters which are supposed to also handle future filter-worthy code. I assume that even the last release version, 2007, is a usable config. Although you'd probably need to disable many site-specific filters.

Yes, not that many people used to know about prxbx.com (perhaps because this name is a little hard to articulate Big Teeth ).
There's a thread at GRC News and at DSLR now, so daily downloads go up a bit.

Not ever properly understanding how Prox and your configs work, I found my list of entries in the bypass list was growing and I 'concluded' I was better off reducing the impact of Prox in favour of Adblock Plus and No Script. People here are very helpful but it seems unreasonable and excessive to ask for help on every little thing that may crop up. Smile!

I don't mean to sound negative, but it's a shame the explanations of _all_ the filters has never been completed as a full doc, so mere users like me could fully grasp what they all do. It would also be great if the Prox Menu (via the little green on-page icon) was much more flexible and user -friendly.

It's certainly good though, to have this new config from you, so thanks again.

personally, this is an IMPOSSIBLE task...
utterly IMPOSSIBLE !!!

no offense, but i wish people would quit pointing a "finger of blame" at 'documentation' until they themselves even "attempted" the sort of DAUNTING task they request...

my two cents...

Hello ProxRocks,

It would be a lengthy task now, yes, but I do feel a useful one for non-technical users.
I'm not trying to come over as all bitter or complaining, by the way, so sorry if my tone is coming through worse in text than it actually is. I'm pleased to have an updated Sidki config set!

RE: sidki-config: Jan 14 2009 beta 2
it's not a bad idea, honestly, it isn't...
just extremely time consuming...

how many "volunteers" can we gather to compile such a beast?
i'm thinking if we can gather enough comrades, a filter-by-filter doc can indeed be generated and would be very helpful...

i pre-release beta-test for sidki once in a while, before beta releases become "public"... i sat down once to compile such a doc, it's an 'impossible' task for "one" person to do... imo...

now, it would be cool, fantastic, awesome, if a "group" of people were to sit down and come up with something...

keep in mind, the "un-off. proxo forum" has an agenda to be a COMMUNITY of config support... relying on 'just a few' to do all the legwork is way too much weight for any given set of legs...

Sure, yes, I for example am / would be willing but I would need to be correctly taught what lots of the filters do first! I'm not saying that as some kind of lame excuse to gleefully continue leeching.
