Besides some of the above mentioned programs (couldn't live without Eudora or UltraEdit anymore),
here is what i use straight since Windows 3.1 times. Its current incarnation is called PowerPro.

http://www.windowspowerpro.com/index.html

quote:

Running commands: Tool bars, tray icons, hot keys, mouse actions, menus, timer, scheduler.
Controlling other program's windows: Close, minimize, maximize, roll-up to caption, tray minimize, position.
Providing utility functions: Send keystrokes to programs, run commands when windows first open, virtual desktops, clipboard extender, keyboard macros, shutdown, show all folder files in a menu, sounds, wallpaper, and screensaver activation and randomization.

Examples of my setup:
- Run a script that launches/closes apps etc when going online/offline.
- Show certain menus only when you are online.
- A menu with my email addresses etc for auto-pasting.
- Right click the window min button to minimize to systray.
- Right click the window max button to toggle "always on top" (handy for the prox log window).
- Also minimize the window when right clicking the right half of the caption bar (usually works even if there is no min button). The missing of the last feature drives me wild when i'm on other computers.

It turned from shareware to freeware (not many such cases), is updated frequently, and has a Yahoo! Group.

Downside: It takes a while until you have it the way you want.

I almost forgot about this one, so 'used' am I to having it activated...it's also the first tool I setup after installing a new system, that is how much I have become depending on it...

WonderIcon
-Assign hotkeys for common tasks (minimize windows, restart Windows, etc.)
-Automatically change your system's sound-effect files every few minutes (or seconds)
-Minimize programs onto the taskbar tray instead of just onto the taskbar, either by a keystroke or by right-clicking a window's Minimize button with your mouse
-Configure a menu of easily-accessible commands
-Increase or decrease speaker volume with the press of a key
-Automatically run programs at start-up, and hide them, minimize them to the taskbar tray, etc.
-Lots more!
[note from me]
it can do some real nifty stuf with windows,
maximize only vertical or horizontal instead of fullscreen
'Bounce' window snug against any screen edge
Influence Z-Order (send to back/front, etc)
and it's free

eDexter
Freeware
http://www.pyrenean.com/
A tiny webserver that listens on 127.0.0.1:80

DriveCrypt
Shareware
http:www.drivecrypt.com/
With 1344bit blowfish and SHA2 it is simply the best hard
disk encryption available. Add DriveCrypt Plus and you can
encrypt your whole disk including the OS. You can also get
the older freeware Scramdisk for Win9x at
http://www.samsimpson.com/scramdisk.php
but DriveCript is well worth the expenditure since it's
encrypted volume files are undetectable as such (when renamed).

RegRun3

manager.

DNS Query

Copernic 2001 Pro
Shareware (Adware ala Opera)
http://www.copernic.com/products/copernic/pro/index.html
A metasearch utility for searching multiple search engines
at once. Stores all your searches and results in a database.
Persistantly attempts calling home but can be easily blocked.

Google Toolbar for IE
Freeware.
http://toolbar.google.com/
Adds a search bar to IEs toolbar.
Downside - Autoupdates itself via IE without asking but it's not
spyware. The autoupdates can be blocked if so desired.

Eudora Pro
Adware ala Opera
http://www.eudora.com/
IMHO simply the best email client available but some folks hate it.
Calls home till it is registered, run in paid mode and configured to
ignore audits. If you check out the software shops you might be able
to find v4.0 - v4.22 which did not call home.

UltraEdit
Shareware
http://www.ultraedit.com/downloads/index.html
Best text editor ever. No Proxo user should be without it.

Facing each other,
a thousand miles apart.

Questions and Answers / Banner Ads
« Last post by Larry B on August 29, 2002, 04:50:52 PM »
I just installed Proxi 4.3 and set up the proxy on IE5.5. I had just removed Webwasher as it used up to many resources. In testing it out, I found that banner ads are getting through. For example, at the top of www.aol.com there are small banner ads and at search.aol.com there is a large classmates banner that gets through.

Oh, I am not an AOL user, I just knew that their sites would be full of ads!!

Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Thanks, Larry
