where are free public proxies
« on: February 28, 2002, 10:51:33 PM »
Does anyone know of any free public proxies that are available to the public for surfing.  I would like to try with promitron but I don't want to use an unathoried server.  I think this is what I am looking for but some reason I can't get it to work with proximtron.  http://www.magusnet.com/proxy.html.   I keep getting Lookup of proxy's hostname failed.  I am using port 8080.  I am new at trying to surf with proxies.  Any tips, tricks, advice, and help would be great.

Thanks Monger99

Hi Monger99,
I would suggest checking your ISP for a cache proxy, ie:
cache.yourisp.net:8080
proxy.yourisp.com:1080 etc...
A proxy hosted on your ISP would likely be the fastest available to you, however personally i find that the main proportion of sites i visit are not cached and using an external proxy server, such as the one hosted by my isp, actually slows my surfing.

Hello "Monger99",
                  I'm not at My Computer right now so I don't have the information for you right now. But I will send you a couple of the Proxies that I use to you in an e-mail when I get back home. One of the great things that I've found about "Proxo" is that you can enter CGI.s in the Use Proxy line. Once that you enter it in, you don't have to keep going back to their home-page to add another URL in. I use a few CGI.s because they are very fast for me, but I use other types of proxies as well. However, there is a possibility with a CGI that sometimes they Fail to alter the URL and redirect it through the CGI. and your privacy be compromised. However, on the forum there is a "special Filter" that Scott Lemon(Proxomitron's Creator) has posted for the use of CGI.s that takes care of this problem. I works really well. Just use the FORUM's "search feature at the top of the page to find the post and just type in CGI proxy and you should have all the posts that have been made on that subject. There are just tons and tons of information on the FORUM that can be found this way. And as soon as I can get my fingers on the Key-Board of my machine, I'll send you the info.
I hope that you have a Wonderful and Blessed Day, MY FRIEND! Keep in touch.

Hello,

I found the post you mentioned but I don't know how to add this info into proximtron.  Where and how do you enter a cgi script. I don't even see a field for the key, in/out fields.  Would that be entered as a webpage or header filter?

In = FALSE
Out = TRUE
Key = "URL: CGI proxy demo"
URL = "(^someproxy.com/cgi-bin/proxy)"
Match = "1"
Replace = "$RDIR(http://someproxy.com/cgi-bin/proxy.cgi?1)"

Thanks for all the responses

Hi Monger99,
           The "CGI.-Filter" will be added to the "Headers" filter. Click on the "Header" button on the Proxo dialog box. Now Click "New". This will let you create a "New" filter for Prox. Now when the New Filter dialog box pops up, Just "Copy & Paste" the Filter Values into the Proxo command-lines. (1).Key is the name of the New Filter and goes in the "HTTP HEADER" line,(2). URL goes into the URL MATCH line, (3). Match goes into the HEADER VALUE MATCH line, and (4). Replacement values go into the REPLACEMENT TEXT line. Next click "OK" and then "APPLY" and your NEW Filter will be added to the list of Header Filters! And the (In/Out) you will see when you Click "Header" on the Proxo dialog box. If the filter is an out filter, you would 'tick' Out to enable it. Now it is important to remember when Copying and pasting Filter values, the " are not part of the filter values, they just show where the values start and where they end. The Match value of the CGI filter would be 1 not "1". Also you must "save" the changes you make in Proxo or the next time you boot-up your filter may be gone. You do this by Clicking the Left green colored floppy disk at the top of Proxo's dialog box, when it changes are saved the floppy is dark.
In the posted CGI filter, where that you see "someproxy.com/cgi-bin/proxy" in the URL=line and the REPLACEMENT=line, you will need to add a CGI proxy address instead of "someproxy.com/cgi-bin/proxy". And as soon as I make this post I will send you some addresses through e-mail.. I hope that they work well for you.
You can add a proxy to Proxo though without making this filter, just by clicking the "Proxy" button, and adding the Proxy address and port number in the command-line, and to enable it just 'tick' the "Use Proxy" on the dialog box.
Keep in touch,MY FRIEND!

Hello "JD5000",
              It would be a great pleasure to send you all the information, MY FRIEND. I will be sending it to you as soon as I can get home this evening. And please don't feel like it would be leeching. Here on this FORUM,(which I believe is the Greatest FORUM on the net) we believe in sharing and helping one another all the we can. As ARNE always says, "The more we share, the more we know". And I believe that all of us together is a whole lot better than any one of us is alone.
And anything that I can help you with, please feel free to ask. I'm just a learner my-self. And the people on this FORUM, have become some of my best Friends. Anyway, I just checked the "Questions" folder and saw your post, so if it has been awhile since you made the post, don't think that I didn't want to share. As soon as I get home I will send you that information.
I hope that you have a Wonderful and Blessed Day MY FRIEND! "Safe-Surfing"

Proxomitron can be chained with other proxy progs like A4proxy, multiproxy.
It works with both public and private proxyservers.

Here is a site I found recently : -

http://www.atomintersoft.com/products/alive-proxy/proxy-list/default.asp#proxy-list

I've found that proxy lists on the web tend to die quickly, this is probably
due to overusage which alerts the system administrators, you could try scanning
for some yourself using a tool such as ProxyHunter.

Using Proxyhunter, although potentially useful, is not such a good idea as it may get you busted by your ISP. Your true IP address must be hidden before scanning. Used it twice and got a warning letter from my ISP after an outside party complained about sniffing routines originating from my address. Proxyhunter's startup screen warns that using the proggie may set off hacking alarms. It's not a mal proggie. Just have to figure out a workaround.

Thanks for your warm welcome, Jak.
I'll check out the links you provided. I'm familiar with rosinstruments. As you know, theirs is a subscription service.
I do use J.A.P. anonimyzing proxy. It works well for me, however, everyone should know that the anonimity level depends on how much traffic is on their server at the given time. Less users = less anonimity. This is my experience. It's a beta situation right now, so we'll see. I also have a question about another anonymity software which I'll post in another thread.
