Speed up connection
« on: March 28, 2002, 11:00:28 AM »
i've realized a page on my site to really speed up your internet connection.
that page required me a long period of tuning and testing, but now is complete.
here is the link:

http://virgolamobile.50megs.com/modem.html

NOTE:

1. settings have to be applied ONLY to dial-up and ISDN connections, not cable or xSDL;
2. settings refer to Tcp-Ip parameters and Win9x/ME series only, but not to browser;
3. that page is ONLY in italian language, but there you'll find all links you need to Microsoft Knowledge Base and Requests for Comments;
4. read TWICE technical documents before ask questions.

happy to share knowledge,
altosax.

hi shaka,
thank you for reading my page and for your comments.

i've visited your site and i've found more or less the same trick that i discuss elsewhere on my site, but not in the modem page. i offer to visitors the possibility to download a complete copy of my pages from:

http://virgolamobile.50megs.com/binaries/sito.zip

take a look, even if they all are in italian language.

i don't agree with you for the fact that cable, xDSL and dial-up users may use the same settings, for example cable and xDSL users have to increase the receive window to speed up connection, dial-up users have to decrease it.

i think also that you suggestion to disable path MTU discovery applied to dial-up modem can slow down connection, not to increase.

btw, this forum is not the right place to discuss about modem settings, i apologize with arne for this. i can only suggest here to read microsoft technical document at:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q158474
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q239/7/31.asp

if you like, write me at [email protected]

regards,
and happy easter,
altosax.

I know the wrong MTU setting will slow the internet. Running *:Windows   racet.exe can tell you the MTU your System or ISP is running at.

In your modem settings if you enable compression for your modem your packets will be changed to what works best for that modem card. By useing the cable or DSL settings for windows. Lets the operating system get the packet to the card faster so the card can compress the packet. For most newwer cards the packet will not be higher then the hardwares rated size. The system needs to uncompress the packets for you to use it, making the transfer faster.

For some system this will work very well, If configured correctly.

It all boil's down to what works best for you! I did a lot of testing when I had a dial-up and the bit of info I learned worked very good for lots of systems.

To test your settings of how fast your system is configed, not form point to point! Here: http://forums.speedguide.net:8117/  telles your MTU, MSS size and more.
