Persistent Connections & Proxy Rotations!
« on: May 27, 2002, 07:55:13 PM »
Hi Proxo-Users,
I have been using the Proxomitron Proxy Rotation feature for the last little bit. And for awhile now I have been experiencing some system Freeze ups. Not really often, but more than the occasional freeze. I thought it might be resource leaks or partition break down maybe. But a few days ago the system started slowing down, browser windows started to leave trails as they opened and closed. I thought well, might as disconnect and re-boot, but this time I happen to pop the Proxo Dialog box and I had 27 connections! And there wasn't even a page loading! The only thing I could think of was the Rotation feature that I had been using. Uusually I have from 1 up to 8 connections which all go back to zero after the page has loaded.

So I changed the "Proxo's Proxy rotations per connection" and I haven't experienced one single Freeze up since. I think it might possibly be the kind of proxies that I have been using also.

When a page loads there are from 10 to sometimes 40 connections made which after-wards should close. I had been rotating 1 proxy per connection in Proxo which meant that a different Proxy was being use for each connection made. (Talk about HIGH ANONYMITY!) Recently I had read a post that by "Haiunder" about rotating proxies once every 30 minutes to keep from drawing attention from "Nosy" providers. So I figured at least 10 connections per page, and depending how You Surf, I figure that I load probably a page every minute or two. You know it varies depending if You are doing a search or writting a post. But I thought I would figure it a page a minute just to start with.

So a page a minute, at least 10 connections per page, rotate Proxies every 30 minutes, so I set the Proxo Proxy Rotation to rotate Proxy every 300 connections. So far so good. That drops the Anonymity Factor, but I haven't had to re-boot because of System Freezes either!  I made this post just in case some one else has had the same experience or that someone is thinking about trying out the Proxy Rotation feature in Proxomitron, or maybe some didn't even know that Proxo can do that. PROXOMITRON is one of Greatest Innovative Pieces of Software I have ever Worked With. And You Can Beat The Price! And In My Opinion, This Is the GREATEST FORUM On The Net!

Here's how to get into that feature:( Of course You need at least more than one Proxy in Your Proxomitron Proxy List) Here's a link to a Proxy Search Engine:
http://www.antiproxy.com/proxysearch.php You can search for them and test whether they are up and running, the speed the are running, and whether the IP can be resolve to a URL or not, and even what port You want to run!

"VERY IMPORTANT": You need to test every Proxy, Not just from the search engine, to see whether or not Your IP is being Forwarded through or not! That is one thing the Proxy Search Engine Can Not test for You. I also might mention that Proxo doesn't mind if You make comments after the Proxy's address & port Number, like the Location of the Proxy and the relative Speed of the Proxy.
Example: "000.00.00.0:portnumber zx (fast)"

(1). Click on the Proxo Icon and when the Proxo dialog box pops-up, click on the "Proxy" button.
(2). Now 'RIGHT CLICK' on the Proxy's Address & port Number listed and when the Menu drops down, click on the "Advance Proxy Settings" item.
(3). Now You can make the setting from the "Advance Proxy Settings" dialog box that will suit Your Surfing requirements. After You make the settings, Click 'Ok', and then be sure to Save the Changes by click on the left-green Floppy-disk symbol at the Top of Proxo's Main Dialog box. The Green Floppy should go dark when You Click on it. If You don't Save the Changes, the next You re-boot You will loose ALL the Changes. Not Very COOL!

I Hope that You ALL Have a Wonderful & Blessed Day, MY FRIENDS!

I don't often use remote proxies but when I do, I too use the rotation feature. I don't notice any problem like you described but I run Win2k and so I'd have to do something ungodly to make it freeze. I don't notice a lot of persistant connections either but I've always used a header filter to close all connections in and out. Are the connections you note to the proxy servers used or to the sites visited? I don't think the "Connection: Close all connections (In+Out)" filter would apply to proxy connections but I really never thought about it till now.

BTW have you recently updated any device driver(s) that might account for the freeze ups?

Hi "HpGuru",
You know I hadn't thought of that either until You mentioned. I use that close all connections in and out filter too, but I hadn't thought of it with Proxy connections. That is certainly using Your head and certainly worth looking into. Thanks!
I haven't up-dated any drivers or changed anything other than started using the Rotation Feature in Proxo. And I have been almost constantly on-line for the last few days, and right now I got serveral browser windows up and burning a CD, while I'm making this post, and I just finish sending and e-mail, creating a self-extracting zip and attaching it to the mail, and no problems. Everything is up and running fine.
I was thinking about maybe the Type of Proxies I am using might have something to do with it.
Thanks again for the Insight "HpGuru". I'll be looking into it.
Have a Great & Wonderful Day, My Friend!

This can happen if one or more of the proxies in the rotation list are bad or very slow. When using rotation, it's key to use a good set of working proxies.

It's not really persistent connections that are to blame. What happens is when the bad proxy is called in the rotation, depending on the type of error, it may take awhile to time-out. That can cause threads to build up over time.

Hi "Scott",
Thanks for the information. I did have some proxies in the List that were slow and some that had "bellied Up", but I've been "weeding" the list out this
week-end.
Well I was half-way right, it did have something to do with the "TYPE" of Proxies:(SLOW & DEAD)

Thanks again for Your Post!
Have a Great & Wonderful Day,

Hi "Proxo-Users",
I Got rid of all the slow and dead Proxies, and I've went back to the "Rotate Proxy every [1] connections". And I'll keep You informed about what happens. If You rotate Proxies on THE FORUM You can wind up Logged-In many, many times in the same session. I use a "SET PROXY FILTER" and I have it call to a list called "SetProxy" list. Now what happens is even though I got the Proxy Rotation Feature enabled, when I surf to a site that is in the List, LIKE THE FORUM, the rotation STOPS, and which ever Proxy that I have entered into the FILTER will "Kick In" and that will be the only Proxy that is used for that site or sites in the SetProxy List. I have it Posted here: http://asp.flaaten.dk/pforum/topic.asp?ARCHIVE=&TOPIC_ID=567

Have a Wonderful & Blessed Day, My Good FRIENDS!

Hi Proxo-Users,
I thought of something else to try. If slow Proxies cause Proxo to have Many Active Connections, and everyone of us know that Proxies depending on bandwidth and location can be fast, then Moderate, and sometimes get right down to a crawl. And if You like me, you don't want to give a even a moderate-to-slow up if they're getting the Job done. So if Slow connections cause many connections, why not try to speed-up everything else, before I throw some of the better ones in "File=13". I thought maybe if I Tweek things up abit,Optomize My connection, and get alittle more speed, maybe this problem might be minimized. It might be worth a "Shot". Anyways I'll I keep You posted on the Progress.
Take Care And Have A Wonderful Day!

Hi "Friends",
Yelp! It helped greatly. I thought this way, if over-all loading time was the factor involved, and I can make a proxy move faster, that I would try to change the things that I had control over to speed things up. I discovered that even without a Proxy, my connection was slow as Christmas. Also my ISP had made some changes, so I needed to do some tweaking anyways. Also the J.A.P. program that I didn't use much because of speed, I found out that it was more on my end than the location.
I Hope that Everyone has A Great & Wonderful Day,
