A "Heads-Up" from the gEEksteR:

There are a couple of little known standalone apps that function similar to Jak's mention of CommView above.  One is "BHOCaptor" and the other is "BHO Demon".  Both let you what BHOs are installed on your system.  BHOs are system files that work with IE, aka "browser helper objects".  Basicly they're dll files that function similar to the shell extensions for Explorer.exe.  Bottom line is that BHOs can make life easier for the browser, but they can also be exploited by the unscrupulous. THEY CAN BE USED TO SPY ON YOU BEHIND THE SCENES, LIKE "PHONING HOME".  You can find them at Spywareinfo's download page at <http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads.html>.  They also have some other interesting apps, such as Proxomitron.  All the files on their download page are located ont their server (including Proxo).

If you want to check out more info on BHOs, read the Esposito article about BHOs at MSDN Library, <http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/techart/bho.htm>.  Though it was written in 1999, it's still the definitive article explaining BHOs, and how to create them.  Also BHO Demon has an excellent little HTML help file explaining the abuses of BHOs.

I see some folks are interrested in getting to their webmail thru a pop client.

Web2Pop acts as a local popserver which uses plugin dlls to interface with most known webmail services. Even if there is no direct support, it may be possible to use it anyways as a lot of webmail services use the same type of webmail engine...just adding a line to an inifile may be all you need to do (plus downloading the correct plugin).
http://www.jmasoftware.com

Postie The utilimate command-line mailer! Send and receive mail from the command-line or execute from within virtually any program. Supports NNTP, SMTP, ESMTP, MIME, BASE64 and UUENCODE for posting, and POP3, IMAP4, HTTP protocols for receiving. Available for Windows and Unix. Can post HTML and MHTML (embedded objects) messages.
http://www.infradig.com/index.shtml

JakBeNymble, MailWasher does all you said but one thing may confuse others, you said
quote:
You can read the E-mails while they are still on the e-mail server, and delete them without even downloading them on to Your machine.

to someone quickly glancing over this, it might read as if you could read the msgs too without downloading them, which is ofcourse not quite correct. You obviously have to download them to read them, but deleting on the server ofcourse does not require downloading them...

Hi Proxo-Friends,

Here is a great little program that does a lot of great big things. It's 3D Trace-route Program. It's one of the few proggies that will actually Do more than what is advertised. However, if You do check it out, don't download the Newest Beta version(1.6.36:83). It has a problem with the built-in browser.

I downloaded the next older version(v1.6.35:80 2002-08-18) and it didn't have the browser problem. Also when You install it, it automatically adjusts to Your Default browser settings, so if Your default browser is set-up to use "Proxo", then I suppose ALL the Browsing features should be routed through "Proxo". I'm not sure about that, I haven't tested it that far Yet!

Here's a list of the Features:
Core features:

3d traceroute display, multiple graphics modification options
statistic-window with min, max, average, standard deviation
Whois query to everything with one click
history-window with destination ping time
record and playback: record any trace and playback step by step
and the browser is already built in.
3d Traceroute besitzt eine integrierte deutschsprachige Oberfl?che.
Einfach starten, Umschaltung erfolgt automatisch.
Day and Night trace: Admins beloved toy
Command-line execution mode. Full replacement for good old buddy tracert.
Domain Harvester: helps to find similar domains
passive OS fingerprinting
Port scanner (knows 3,612 well known ports)
IP-Range-Scanner (scan from Start-IP to End-IP)
analyze eMail headers against RBLs
HTTP Server Spy
build in TELNET client
long period Ping and HTTP monitor
Low CPU-Usage
Working with 98, ME, 2K, XP
and if you are lucky, 95, too!

Here is the link for download & ScreenShot:
http://www.hlembke.de/prod/3dtraceroute/

I think  it's a great 'Tool' that any "Computer-Enthusaist" would want to have.
Hope You have a Great & Wonderful Day,
"Jak"

Hi "Geekster",

Welcome to the FORUM! Glad You are here! Thanks for the information and the Links. I went to the spywareinfo site and their download page was down at the moment so I tried to find some more links to the "proggies". BHODemon at http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm and BHOCaptor at http://www.webattack.com/get/bho.shtml

Also here is where You might find some open relays for the e-mail proggies. I went there and tested a bunch of them and found only a couple that were usable. You have to subscibe to look at the first 2000 of them. They are the result of the most current list. But the rest of the list can be viewed by anyone.
http://www.openrelaycheck.com/orc/openrelaylist.asp
But the ones I checked by sending an e-mail to my-self, and checking the Full headers revealed my IP. They hid the Host name, but forwarded my IP through.

Also on the "3D Trace-route" proggie on the Whois feature it contacts a web-site to gather the info. I thought that The site might be a good candidate for PROXO's "USE RPA" list. so where it queries that site the connection would be make through a Remote Proxy. I haven't had time Yet to find out what port/ports the other features use. But it should be interesting.

And again "Geekster" let me take this opportunity to WELCOME YOU, to (What I believe to be) the Best FORUM on the "NET"!
Have a Great & Wonderful Day,
"Jak"

eDexter
Freeware
http://www.pyrenean.com/

disk encryption available. Add DriveCrypt Plus and you can
encrypt your whole disk including the OS. You can also get
the older freeware Scramdisk for Win9x at

but DriveCript is well worth the expenditure since it's
encrypted volume files are undetectable as such (when renamed).

RegRun3

Shareware (Adware ala Opera)
http://www.copernic.com/products/copernic/pro/index.html
A metasearch utility for searching multiple search engines
at once. Stores all your searches and results in a database.
Persistantly attempts calling home but can be easily blocked.

Google Toolbar for IE
Freeware.

Downside - Autoupdates itself via IE without asking but it's not

I almost forgot about this one, so 'used' am I to having it activated...it's also the first tool I setup after installing a new system, that is how much I have become depending on it...

WonderIcon
-Assign hotkeys for common tasks (minimize windows, restart Windows, etc.)
-Automatically change your system's sound-effect files every few minutes (or seconds)
-Minimize programs onto the taskbar tray instead of just onto the taskbar, either by a keystroke or by right-clicking a window's Minimize button with your mouse
-Configure a menu of easily-accessible commands
-Increase or decrease speaker volume with the press of a key
-Automatically run programs at start-up, and hide them, minimize them to the taskbar tray, etc.
-Lots more!
[note from me]
it can do some real nifty stuf with windows,
maximize only vertical or horizontal instead of fullscreen
'Bounce' window snug against any screen edge
Influence Z-Order (send to back/front, etc)
and it's free

Besides some of the above mentioned programs (couldn't live without Eudora or UltraEdit anymore),
here is what i use straight since Windows 3.1 times. Its current incarnation is called PowerPro.

http://www.windowspowerpro.com/index.html

quote:

Running commands: Tool bars, tray icons, hot keys, mouse actions, menus, timer, scheduler.
Controlling other program's windows: Close, minimize, maximize, roll-up to caption, tray minimize, position.
Providing utility functions: Send keystrokes to programs, run commands when windows first open, virtual desktops, clipboard extender, keyboard macros, shutdown, show all folder files in a menu, sounds, wallpaper, and screensaver activation and randomization.

Examples of my setup:
- Run a script that launches/closes apps etc when going online/offline.
- Show certain menus only when you are online.
- A menu with my email addresses etc for auto-pasting.
- Right click the window min button to minimize to systray.
- Right click the window max button to toggle "always on top" (handy for the prox log window).
- Also minimize the window when right clicking the right half of the caption bar (usually works even if there is no min button). The missing of the last feature drives me wild when i'm on other computers.

It turned from shareware to freeware (not many such cases), is updated frequently, and has a Yahoo! Group.

Downside: It takes a while until you have it the way you want.

Hi "Proxo-Users",

This is Great!! This was what I was hoping for when I started this Folder! Thank You One and All! Like a "One-Stop-Shop" for Proggies! When You download a new program and You read the details about it, You know the web-site is just going to say great things about. How many of us, have downloaded some Proggie that suppose to be the best thing that's come along since "they put pockets on shirts", and then it doesn't do anything but conflicts with other apps, full of "ET Servers" and trogans, or worse it crashes Your "Beloved" 20lbs Silicon Diode paper weight???

With everybody contributing to this thread like this, we not only have a collection of "Time Used and Proved" Apps, but the shared experience of Using the Programs! And if anybody had a problem with configurations of a certain program then we know where to get some help with it. Plus with everyone running different O/Ses, we can know how a certain App will run in a certain environment! Great!!!

Here is some programs I have been working on. Instead of using My ISP's Smtp server, I set a Mail server up on My Over-priced Silicon Diode Paper Weight and by-passed the whole thing. I can send/receive Mail twice as fast as before since it comes straight to me! I have tested probably about 10 and here is the best All around one I have found.
http://www.argosoft.com/applications/mailserver/download.asp
Of course I downloaded the Free version!

And here is another Ghost-mail type Program that I like very much, it's called "U-Mail". It doesn't come with a couple of default smtp servers or a default remailer, but it does have an address book, and a feature that will allow You save the messages that You write, so in about 2 or 3 mouse clicks, You can be on Your way to e-mail that special someone You've been think of e-mailing. I've Ghost mail, this one and a few other chained to the Mail server above! http://users.otenet.gr/~aorf/

I hope that each and everyone of You have just the best day ever!
"Jak"=:-)

PS:" I'm testing a "Bounce Spam-mail" proggie right now that works for Web-based E-mails(Yahoo, Hotmail,etc..). If it pans out to be a keeper, I post it soon"--"

Well, here's a list of some proggys that I use regularly.

GNU Emacs editor from http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/emacs.html
if you can't do it in Emacs, it's not worth doing
(Actually, I also use UltraEdit for a few things)

The Cygwin Unix environment for Windows from http://www.cygwin.com/
makes all the good Unix commands available on Windows.

Atomic Clock Sync for keeping your system clock synched to an atomic
clock time source on the internet,
from http://www.worldtimeserver.com/atomic-clock/

Download Accelerator (DAP) from http://www.speedbit.com/
for downloading files.

OpenSA Web Server from http://www.opensa.org/. A distribution of
the Apache web server packaged for Windows.

Process Explorer for Windows from http://www.sysinternals.com
for telling you everything you could imagine about processes running
on your machine. In fact, everything I've used from this site was
good. These guys really know the internals of the Windows OS,
if you're not familiar with this site, you should take a look at what
they have.
