You have the browser using Privoxy's port (8118)
Point the browser at Proxomitron (8080).

Browser>>The Proxomitron>>Privoxy>>Tor

"hilarity ensues"...
"do not let them deceive you with the legitimation of their myth"

hmmm, which is "easier"?
to convince a Firefox user that they are NOT secure?
or to convince a Tor user that they are NOT anonymous?

They may be "secure".

ProxRocks Wrote:Tor user that they are NOT anonymous?
They may be "anonymous".

It depends on the objective.

RE: Setting up Tor with Privoxy and Proxomitron
For some reason, when I point the browser to proxomitrons port 8080-the browser switches back to port 8118. That's weird, but anyway it doesn't work. What next?

RE: Setting up Tor with Privoxy and Proxomitron
"Switches back" when?
Have you added the proxy settings to user.js?
That could cause it to switch back when the browser is started.
boilz4 Wrote:What next?
All I know to say is
browser>>The Proxomitron(8080)>>Privoxy(8118)>>Tor(9050)
They all must be running, of course.
BFilter can be used instead of Privoxy.
You can drop the second proxy by using something like FreeCap.

To debug,
Start Tor. Tor must indicate "Looks like client functionality is working."
Open the Proxomitron's Log window.
Open Privoxy's Log window.
Try loading Google.
The Proxomitron's Log window should show activity and the use of Privoxy.
Privoxy also has a Log window. It should show the request.

If you see activity in all the Logs and it doesn't work, I'd suspect a problem with Tor or the network.
Tor can take forever. It hasn't always worked for me.
I've read that some sites block Tor. ISPs could also.

Luck

RE: Setting up Tor with Privoxy and Proxomitron
As far as I know, firefox switches back to port 8118 and I don't know why.

Here is the debugging part:
I ran all 3 programs, tor and privoxy is working fine like usual. I opened up firefox and I have checked all logs for tor and privoxy and they are fine(no errors), but no requests or information about proxomitron in there logs. During that time, I also checked proxomitrons log and there is no activity what so ever about privoxy or tor.

You said, 'have you added the proxy settings to user.js?'.......that part I was confused because I have no file named 'user.js' in privoxy, proxomitron, or Tor files and directories. I checked the file that I downloaded from you called 'Privoxy Tor Settings.zip' and in it contains the following 3 files:

config.txt
default.action
standard.action

I checked everywhere but I do not have a file named 'user.js'

I am using version 4.5 of proxomitron(english version) and the latest version of privoxy and tor(vildalia bundle) sorry if I didn't point that out before. As of now, I guess I need 'user.js' which I don't have, if you have it hand it over please arrrrghhh Smile!

RE: Setting up Tor with Privoxy and Proxomitron
Oh you meant about:config.

Well anyway, I have found the solution to the automatic switching of the ports. It was under Tor's configuration. I just changed it to 8080. Then I checked all the logs and everything is working fine. My scripts and configurations for proxomitron showed up as blocked which is a good thing and my ip has changed.

Thanks a lot for your time JJoe. I am very much pleased now.

Bye

RE: Setting up Tor with Privoxy and Proxomitron
I apologize, I meant the 'Torbutton plugin' configuration. It was 8118 and so I changed it to 8080, but for the 'socks host' i left it as 9050 and it works Smile!

Guest;

Errr, I hate to say anything here that might upset the apple cart, but I'm pretty certain that your problem would get more, and better, attention over at http://www.privoxy.org, instead of here at the Proxomitron forums.

Also, the developers maintain a Privoxy support forum on SourceForge, found at: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id...tid=211118

Good Luck!

RE: Setting up Tor with Privoxy and Proxomitron
I just wanted to point out that Tor now comes in a bundle: Vidalia, Privoxy and Tor (it'll actually install all three for you, and Privoxy comes Tor-ready out of the box):

https://www.torproject.org/download.html.en

After installing the bundle, all you need to do is modify Proxomitron's Remote Proxy to be: 127.0.0.1:8118
Your browser should still be set to use Proxomitron as the HTTP Proxy.

The connection would look something like this:

Browser => Proxomitron => Privoxy => Tor
Visit this user's website

RE: Setting up Tor with Privoxy and Proxomitron
Just to make sure I have this right, in Proxomitron, I check "Use Remote Proxy" and in the External Proxy Selector box I insert 127.0.0.1:8118 and click OK. Then in Firefox, tools - options - advanced - network - settings I use HTTP Proxy 127.0.0.1 Port 8080 and leave the SSL Proxy as 127.0.0.1 port 8118 and Socks Host as 127.0.0.1 9050.
I leave Privoxy "enabled" and "Tor Enabled."

Having done all that when I try to open Firefox - google, I get a "503" message stating "This is Privoxy 3.0.6 on localhost (127.0.0.1), port 8118, enabled" followed by a box stating "Your request for http://www.google.com/ could not be fulfilled, because the connection to http://www.google.com (127.0.0.1) could not be established."

I noticed that if Tor is disabled and then re-enabled, it changes the Firefox HTTP connection back to port 8118. This is pretty frustrating.

Any idea what could be wrong?
Here's a follow-up: I went to Torbutton preferences and changed the custom proxy setting for HTTP Proxy to 127.0.0.1 port 8080. Now the Firefox config does not change when I enable/disable/enable Tor -- it stays as 8080. New web pages open properly, but when I do a click "test settings" in the Tor preferences window, I get a ""[Javascritpt Application]" window that states "Tor proxy test: HTTP error for check.torproject.org:503" -- I do not know what that means, so I do not know if Proxomitron --> Privoxy --> Tor is working.

RE: Setting up Tor with Privoxy and Proxomitron
Question,
Which way is best and why?
Browser => Privoxy => Proxomitron => Internet
or
Browser => Proxomiton => Privoxy => Internet
--either way I see a slight slow down on large searches with google.
Dosen't Proxomitron with the right filters do all that Privoxy can do?
So why use Privoxy, and run slower, and more headaces when some thing stops working(knowing where the problem is)?
