Proxomitron and Chat software!
« on: June 28, 2002, 05:21:48 PM »
Hi "My Proxomitronic-Friends",

                             I was asked a question lately that I wasn't sure about what the answer was, so I thought that I would post it here just in case someone might have some insight on the subject. The question was about "chaining" chats and Proxo together. Chats beening Yahoo messenger, ICQ, or some other chat-ware.

My Friend asked me,"Can a Proxo filter be made to stop other "Users",(not the OP), in a chat-room from "booting" him out of the Room"?

I think that is a good question. I know that it would probably depend on what the "others" were using to boot him out. If it were Scripts, I think possibly a filter might be constucted that would work, but if it was done by forging an "Over-Size Packet",(The 'PING' of Death)not only would it boot You out of the room, but also kill Your connection. Not Very COOL!

I have chained some "chats" to Proxo by setting the Chats connection Proxy setting to Proxo's address and then setting a Remote Proxy in Proxo, to try and "cloak" the IP. Then Me and a Buddy of mine with the same set-up, would take turns Pinging each other and check to see if the IP was hid, now I don't understand it, but sometimes it would work and other times it would not. Possibily some other factors where involved.

Anyway I didn't know what to tell him, so if You have any information that You could share, as always I will be eternally grateful.

Have a Great & Wonderful Week-end, My Good Friends!

Hi,
It's been a while since i've used IRC but, as far as i remember, a proxy hosted on a local machine will not help in hiding an IP or preventing an attack...

Hi!

Normally chats (like IRC) don't use HTTP protocol which is all Proxomitron knows to filter. I have seen a few that do use HTTP though - mostly to make them better able to go through firewalls.  It's probably rare, but in those cases you might just be able to filter some things. Still I don't think you could stop someone with operator/moderator access from booting you out of a channel - that normally happens on the chat server itself and doesn't depend on the client.

Hi "Guys",

          Thanks for all the input and info.! I really didn't know what to tell My Friend about this. I thought it was a good idea, if it could be done. Well now at least I can give an intelligent answer to any that would ask about this subject!
And as always I appreciate All of You for taking time out to answer My Questions.
Thanks again,
"Jak"

Hi "GUYS",

I thought that I would come back and explain something more. Every chat-ware that I have, has the option to connect through http or Socks 4 or Socks 5 Proxies. What I was doing was Using Proxo as "interface" between the Chat-ware and the Remote Proxy.
[Chat-messenger>----->Proxo>----->Remote Proxy>----->Chat Server]
 I know that I could have by-Passed Proxo, but I was using the some of the filters in it for the login.

Hi Jak. Here's a chat proggy that might interest you.
=====================================================

PSST
http://netforth.sourceforge.net/psst/

With PSST, your private messages don't go through any server - they are peer to peer, direct from your PC to the PC of the person you're talking to. Also, they're encrypted, meaning that nobody without a lot of expensive resources can eavesdrop on you. All encryption is handled automatically in the background, so you don't have to mess around with complicated keys and so forth.

PSST is rough-n-ready - a very basic console-based program, yet mindlessly easy to use.
You just type in the hostname or IP address of whoever you want to talk to, and you're connected. Speak Freely.

British users can breathe easy as well. Since the encryption keys are randomly generated and securely exchanged, and not stored, you are outside the reach of the Regulation of Investigative Powers Act - you can't hand over any keys if you don't have access to them yourself !!

Hi "HpGuru",

           Thanks for the Link! Great Program. The only thing is Me and My Buddy can't decide which one of us is going to give the other his IP. LOL!  It's Great!

Also I might add to the post I made above. There are some Chat-rooms where My Friends go and the don't chat, they just have an all out war booting one another and running scripts on each other. It's all in fun though! They share what new "Cyber Phasers and bombs" they've come up with and have a great time with it. I've watched them and laughed me head off at their War-Games. That's why one of them wanted to know if Proxo could offer some Protection against "getting hit".

Have a Great evening,
"Jak"
